1995 - Present: Sr. Risk Assessment Engineer, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC)
Provide technical, analytical, and computational support for engineering development and evaluation and safety and risk assessment. Selected accomplishments are as follows:
Evaluated probabilities of loss of containment or loss of shielding for nuclear waste containers exposed to drops, impact, and fires as part of safety assessments for a proposed nuclear waste repository. Authored parts of repository license application successfully docketed with NRC.
Provided technical evaluations of several engineering studies and proposals, including discharge airlock monitoring, modeling a full-scale processing unit with a laboratory unit, non-intrusive assessment for RCRA metals content, alternative approaches to decontamination such as with steam or molten aluminum, and VX decomposition kinetics.
Performed calculations to substantiate case against claim for hundreds of millions of dollars.
Developed database summarizing design, operating, and control characteristics of incineration facilities including monitoring and AWFCO settings to ensure compliance with air quality standards (CAA, RCRA, MACT, TSCA).
Developed generalized method and performed heating and cooling load calculations for strategic protected spaces at numerous military installations. Designed sunshield for monitoring equipment.
Developed models of a wide variety of internal (due to processing activities) and external (such as earthquakes and aircraft crashes) events to determine the potential releases of toxic clouds.
Developed models of casing failure due to drops and impacts applicable to variety of munition types and applied models to predict probabilities of agent leakage from or energetic initiation of various munitions for numerous hypothesized accident scenarios.
Developed a model of adsorption and desorption in a carbon filter bed and evaluated filter response to upset conditions.
Evaluated potential risks arising from chemical warfare agent contamination of energetic components in rockets, cartridges, and mortars, including the potential for autoignition in decomposing rocket propellant grains.

Modeled heat transfer and chemical vaporization and transport within a furnace using the PHOENICS computational fluid dynamics software package.

Apply engineering expertise to assist customers and co-workers solve a wide variety of problems in the areas of process simulation, releases to environment, equipment design, physical property data, and working with mainframe systems. Implement and support the ASPEN Plus and FLOWTRAN process simulation systems and other engineering computing tools. Develop new engineering computer programs as needed. Support the users of these computing tools in the areas of heat transfer equipment design, air dispersion, dynamic modeling of Delaware River estuary, hazards evaluation, and risk assessment. Assist with plant startups. Selected accomplishments are as follows:
Developed an optimization model for the energy system of a large, highly integrated production facility, which is used for minimizing operating costs, forecasting utility needs, and evaluating multi-million dollar capital investment options.
Performed air dispersion modeling for several production facilities to demonstrate compliance with local, state, and federal air quality standards.
Added features to enhance and extend the capabilities of process simulation packages (ASPEN Plus and FLOWTRAN) for solving engineering problems.
Customized the ASPEN Plus physical property system resulting in a smooth transition from FLOWTRAN. Guided vendor support to ensure ASPEN Plus would increasingly meet the modeling needs of the company. Installed ASPEN on an alternative platform to cut usage costs by 80% and set up an interface for corporate-wide access.
Improved phase equilibrium models and modeling techniques and developed correlations for highly non-ideal vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid systems for use in process simulation. Improved physical properties increased design engineer confidence in simulation results and reduced the need for over-design, cutting construction costs.
Modeled potential accidental releases from piping and pressurized vessels including consideration of two-phase flow, flash atomization, and pool evaporation.
Updated a condenser design and rating program to use current technology and added optimization to increase users' productivity and confidence in results.
Developed a dynamic model of a processing facility used to predict performance during startup and shutdown and response to process upsets.
Developed a model of a proprietary equipment design enabling simulations to meet product specifications and increase throughput.

1978 - 1980: Senior Engineer, Hercules, Inc.
Perform hazards evaluations and recommend process modifications to control risks for chemical and explosives production facilities and operations, both for local facilities (ballistic research and rocket motor production) and for other companies on a consulting basis. Selected accomplishments are as follow:
Co-authored a safety manual for the Department of Energy containing guidelines for safe handling and operations with high explosives.
Evaluated munitions production facilities and operations and made recommendations to reduce risk to within acceptable limits.
Developed methodology to streamline prediction of event probabilities used in hazards evaluation.

1977 - 1978: Technical Computer Applications Engineer, Fuller Company
Serve in the Research Department of this manufacturer of pyroprocessing (e.g. rotary kilns) and solids handling (e.g. pneumatic conveying and cyclone) equipment by developing and supporting computer models of the companys products used for equipment design and sales demonstrations.
