Highlights:
There are many highlights in my career which I would be happy to describe in detail, but some that I regard particularly highly include:
1.The budget for a single family housing project called Cross Creek (a 618 lot project for four owners each with a different percentage of ownership rights per filing).was established two years before the project started. We took two years to do ninety five percent of the civil development and although the city doubled and quadrupled their fees in this period, we still managed to hold to the budget while raising the standard of quality for housing projects in that area. I personally put all the subs together and worked with engineers using value engineering to design for efficiency. This project became a top seller, with good profitability for the two national builders involved. For another it top ten of their projects in the United States, and it was an extremely good project for a local builder.
2.Every project or budget that I have been involved with from the start of budgeting/bidding or start of construction has been met or beaten along with the schedule for the project. This has been accomplished by keeping safety at the top of the priority list. Most of projects that I have managed been hard bids or fixed price budgets, with liquidated damages tied to progress dates, or fast track projects.
3.While at PCL did not use foremen - used lead personnel instead. We gave all the union trades leadership training and the lead people got extra leadership training along with blueprint, specification reading and other skill training. On the light rail project the Rail Contractor was falling behind on making switches so we trained four PCL hands to do this task. They outperformed the sub contractor team of 12, proving that when the trade person gets the right training they can achieve marvellous things.
Value engineering:
A strong focus on the concept of value engineering has helped me to create high value for the companies I have worked with. PCL is a great example where I helped to get the specs changed on the dirt used in the back fill of flyover bridges, saving close to $1 million for the company. In fact when another company built there flyover to the specification they had problems.
Changing how the electrical and communication mains were installed on flyover bridge with a reduction of 525 man hours, 150 hrs equipment hours, around $100,000 in material and got rid of the liability of working around an sensitive finish product. Personal attributes:
Personal attributes that are very important to me include: Typically dont stop till the job is done High energy levels Very professional Strong on honesty Give credit where credit is due Highly persuasive Good "people skills" Good leadership skills Strong profit focus Work well to budget constraints Good conceptualization skills
