WORK HISTORY
Operations Manager / Special Projects Manager Birdwell Builders & Associates, Inc., Lakeland, Florida Birdwell Builders & Associates is a concrete contractor located in Lakeland, FL. The firm has developed a team of workers capable of producing high quality concrete work including super-flat floors. The firm has received no less than 9 gold or silver trowel awards for flat floors, ranking them #3 internationally in the number of awards for quality work.
In 2006 I joined the team to manage operations and develop managerial systems to maintain quality, train personnel and supervisors and provide financial tracking for jobs. During my tenure we produced and published a company safety program for all workers, conducted team building and training sessions for supervisors and workers, increased our clientele by offering services beyond concrete placement including complete structural concrete packages, tilt wall construction and concrete design assistance. Review and tracking of bid estimates to assure accuracy and maintain market competitiveness were implemented.
Unlike many of the concrete contractors in the area, we successfully sought out personnel who performed quality work and were able to meet the security clearance requirements to provide services at military installations and nuclear power plants.
Florida Power & Light, Turkey Point Nuclear Facility, RTE Building, Florida City, Florida: Due to the complexity of this project I personally oversaw the estimate and negotiated the contract with the Client. After encountering issues on site during the first week of work I took over direct management and control of work crews to perform demolition of existing concrete slabs, preparation of limerock subgrade, concrete foundations, slab on grade and concrete toppings. Due to the NRC security and safety requirements all work had to be planned and coordinated thoroughly, then properly executed. The quality of the work exceeded specified requirements and quality goals. By initiating good communication with plant security access and security personnel we were able to maintain compliance with all security protocols and foster a good working relationship. Attention to safety resulted in zero recordable accidents at a facility where a paper cut is a recordable accident.
A background in understanding and working within the FPL corporate and managerial system was key to success on this project. Being familiar with "Total Quality Management" and ISO-9000 managerial concepts proved to be invaluable in managing our work within their environment.
MacDill AFB Building 501A Addition / Renovation for SOCOM, Tampa, Florida: Successfully coordinated and executed completion of the structural concrete for this high security addition to SOCOM. Foundation work included pile caps, grade beams, flatwork including slabs on grade and elevated decks. As part of the security protection for this building, we completed production of 1,000 lf+ of a specially designed, cantilevered blast wall allowing the building to remain intact in case of an external blast.
Schools for Hillsborough County School Board, Tampa, Florida: Worked closely with the Construction Managers for the local School Board to complete construction of concrete foundations, slabs and concrete tilt panels for High School PPP in Riverview and Turner Elementary School in New Tampa. Our work was critical to the overall construction schedule and even though delayed by other trades, we modified our work to continue to make progress and "push the schedule" for the client.
Martin Memorial Medical Facility, Stuart, Florida: Due to delays in obtaining permits to commence construction, this project started behind schedule and our help was enlisted to help accelerate completion of the structural concrete deck. Through attentive field management, and development of special concrete mixes we successfully constructed the deck form system, placed the reinforcing steel, poured the concrete and stripped the form system within 30 days time. Work was completed on a very small site and successfully accelerated to meet the client's needs.
St. Joseph's Women's Hospital, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Tampa, Florida: Remodeling of the recovery area of the hospital was accomplished in 3 phases to allow "leap-frogging" between construction areas and the hospital recovery areas. Client satisfaction was maintained through close communication with the hospital staff and construction departments. The end result was that the final AHCA inspection resulted in "no comments" by state inspectors. (This was a first for this hospital and the inspection sheet is now framed and hanging on the wall of the Hospital's Lead Architect.)
So. Metals of Tampa / Disney Animal Kingdom, Kissimmee, Florida: Served as Vice President of Southern Metals of Tampa, Inc. in charge of field and shop operations to manage and oversee a $9 million dollar contract to provide fabrication and erection services for structural and miscellaneous steel and hydraulic systems associated with the animal support buildings. Work involved coordination of shop drawings, shop fabrication, shipping and field installation for a total of 26 specialized buildings. Good communication and coordination with Imagineering architects and engineers was required to understand the use and intent of some of the specialized caging and animal control devices.
Gulfside Elementary School, Pasco County: Completed replacement of all HVAC duct, air handler and chiller units in an elementary school for the School Board of Pasco County. The contract required that the work be completed during the summer recess and be complete and operational in time for teachers to set up classrooms for the new term. All of the required deadlines were met or exceeded. Work was completed ahead of schedule and with a savings of approximately $120,000 from the contracted GMP pricing. This savings was achieved while still providing additional services to paint existing walls and replace vinyl base that were not part of the original scope of work. Proactive management allowed work to move systematically and progressively throughout the project. Through goal setting and good teamwork from all participants we were able to exceed our goals prior to July 4th holiday to allow the project to be shut down over the holiday weekend without adversely impacting the schedule. Full fee was realized and as a direct result of our performance on this project, contracts worth over $26 million were awarded to the firm by the School Board of Pasco County for the construction of new schools. Further contracts were negotiated for replacing HVAC systems at other schools during the summer breaks.
Hadley Park Community Center, Miami Florida: Construction of a new Community Center with a Performing Theater for the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department in the Liberty City area. The contract for this project was a Cost Plus / GMP which was a new contracting method for the City of Miami. Administration required good, open and objective communication with the City, the Architect / Engineers and the operator of the theater facility. The theater portion of the project was greatly expanded midway during construction and we were able to provide effective management to reduce the expected delay costs associated with the changes as well as provide a state of the art theater facility within the City's budget. Due to our work on this project we were brought by a City Commissioner and City Staff to consult on other upcoming projects.
Marriott Hotel Renovation, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida: $1.2 M renovation of the lobby, restaurant and meeting rooms of a flagship hotel. Work was performed on a cost plus basis with almost daily changes in scope. Work was still performed within the allotted time for each phase as event reservations had to be maintained. The end result is a facility with high-end finishes one expects in a flagship Marriott Hotel that is better suited to meet the current market needs for the hotel.
Carmike Cinemas, Bradenton, Florida: Completed a $12 million multiplex cinema in Manatee County, Florida within the allotted time and under budget. Proactive management, building good working relationships with all members of the project team, and good Owner / Architect relations allowed this project to be completed during an industry-wide labor shortage, without sacrificing quality. In spite of the Owner filing for bankruptcy on the day the theater opened, we were able to collect 100% of the contract value, all change orders, legal fees and interest on the outstanding monies for the General Contractor and Subcontractors. This was achieved through active negotiations during bankruptcy proceedings without the need for a lawsuit and trial.
MUTEC, Inc., Columbus, Georgia: Managed the design and formulated the construction budget for the expansion of this subsidiary of Matsushita Corporation. The existing facility manufactures alkaline batteries for wholesale consumers. The expansion involved providing industrial engineering services to maximize production capacity with a yearly peak in customer demand. Working closely with key Japanese managers we were able to provide a complete plan that improved their packaging and warehousing capabilities within their capital budget goals.
Busch Gardens, GWAZI, Tampa, Florida Overcame obstacles in obtaining imported materials and coordinating specialized work associated with construction of the roller coaster maintenance, ride access and concessions buildings and pedestrian areas. Work was complicated by a very tight schedule and delays in importing materials from South Africa. Log framed and thatched structures could not be completed in the traditional way due to the tight site logistics without serious delays in the schedule. Framing crews were augmented and set up in remote areas to perform all work at ground level. Ethnic Zulu workmen were brought in to install the thatch work on the roof structures while still at ground level. Once complete the six thatched structures were moved by crane to the main walkways and set on log posts. The result being that the ride opened on the dates as planned.
United States Coast Guard Air Station, Clearwater, Florida: Management of a $10 M contract for the construction of new maintenance, facilities, housing, water training center and administrative offices as well as the renovation of two fixed wing hangers and construction of a new tarmac for C-130 aircraft. This project was administered by the Federal Government and USCG jointly and required great attention to documentation as well as construction.
