Over the last 25 years of executive management experience with Fortune 100 firms, I have developed a unique blend of abilities in strategic planning, real estate, construction, and facilities maintenance. I also served 8 years as a Captain in the US Air Force. My BS is in engineering from Bradley University, and I have two (2) Master Degrees, one in systems analysis and one in commercial real estate. In my last three positions I was an officer of the company responsible for the strategic development and construction of all company facilities. I have extensive experience in managing profitability in companies with revenues in excess of $800 million and teams of over 200 people.
While my technical skills are well recognized, my greatest strengths are my strategic planning and leadership talents. This includes developing creative solutions, building world-class Teams, and achieving ambitious objectives that set standards for others to follow.
Of course, in this industry, the keys to success are understanding the business, knowing the markets and managing the processes. Over the years I have developed in most major cities of the United States. I have established solid working relationships with exceptional developers, brokers, and contractors throughout the country and have acquired a distinction in my ability to locate, negotiate, and develop highly profitable locations.
I have a solid working knowledge of real estate law and extensive experience in finance, budgeting and managing profitability for public companies with revenues in excess of $2 billion. DPMS, Co. (dba Kool Smiles) 2007-2009 Kool Smiles is the largest national chain of managed dental care clinics of its type. Operating 80 offices in 20 states, the company builds and manages clinics that provide Medicaid-funded dental services to children. In spite of low Medicaid reimbursement rates, the clinics produced extremely attractive unit economics in a largely unpenetrated market, serving over 1 million underprivileged children each year.
Vice President Development Hired as an expert in strategic planning, real estate, and construction to help develop and implement a ground-up program to quickly open highly profitable locations in the heart of core areas of low-income families. In only 22 months helped build a company producing over $40 million in revenues. Developed national strategic expansion plan to build operate 25 clinics in 9 states. PETSMART, INC.2006 - 2007 PetSmart, Inc. is the number one specialty retailer of services and solutions for the lifetime needs of pets, operating more than 950 pet stores in the United States and Canada Vice President of Construction Corporate Officer, accountable for the design, budgeting, due diligence, zoning, permitting, bidding, and construction; opening 100 new stores annually. Annual construction budget of $220 Million and staff of 20 professionals. Improved communications & tracking process with new tracking program. Vice President Real Estate Corporate Officer, reporting to the CEO, directed the efforts of strategic planning, real estate, construction & facilities maintenance. Management accountability for $46Million annual budget and staff of 2 Directors & 11 professionals. Led expansion effort which increased company size from $385 Million to $800 Million. Opened 33 (32,000 s.f.) retail stores and opened outlets in 6 new markets. Established nation-wide Broker network to acquire all real estate with no staff. DEL TACO, INC.1996-1999 The #2 quick-service Mexican Restaurant chain in the US Vice President of Development Reporting directly to the Owner, charted ambitious strategic plan growing this chain of 295 restaurants into a major national competitor of 1,000+ units. Led development initiative that increased annual openings from 4 to 45 restaurants per year with no additional G & A. Personally negotiated and managed 37 deals averaging $2.5 million each. Developed the first real estate department using mostly outsourcing opportunities. Established a formal Franchise development and support program to expand the brand.
FRIENDLYS ICE CREAM CORPORATION1993-1996 Premium brand ice Cream Company with 750 family casual dining restaurants Director of Construction & Maintenance Accountable for 8 departments with 168 employees and a $26 million capital budget providing construction and maintenance services to 750 company-owned family restaurants. Completed over 1,200 separate projects in one year, under budget and on time. Restructured C&M teams, increasing productivity & reducing costs by 30%. Developed new prototype design that was later emulated by 3 other restaurant chains.
