Company Description:
Hall and Company is an insurance brokerage firm that specializes in the placement of A/E professional liability insurance. We currently are the brokers for more than 3,600 architects, engineers, environmental consultants and land surveyors. Our clients are located throughout the United States. The U.S. map pictured above illustrates the general geographic disbursement of our customers; specifically the map depicts actual customers that are serviced by one of our brokers, Matthew Copus, who has maintained the map by placing a pin for each of his customers since he started with Hall & Company in 1998. We are an independent brokerage firm and place insurance with a wide variety of carriers. There are about 17 different professional liability insurance carriers that we use in serving our customers. We have several unique programs with Lloyds of London that are exclusive to Hall & Company; including the “triple play” coverage of professional liability, directors and officers coverage and employment practices liability insurance. We are located in Poulsbo, Washington, a suburb west of Seattle located on the Kitsap Peninsula. Our office is located a 35-minute ferry ride out of the city and a short drive the length of Bainbridge Island and across the Agate Pass Bridge into our small Bavarian-themed town of 8,000. Michael Hall is the President of the firm. Mike has an engineering degree and worked as a surveyor for the USGS and as an engineer for CH2M Hill, each for a couple of years. After completing an MBA at Harvard, he started as a management consultant before founding his own consulting practice in 1985. The initial focus of the practice was on ownership transfer planning and strategic planning services to engineers and architects. During the hard insurance market in 1992, one of Mike’s clients asked if there was anything he could do to help with their insurance rates. The client said, “We are paying more for insurance than we are making in profits!” Six months later Hall & Company was licensed and began providing professional liability insurance for design firms. Some good fortune in the early days lead to two very large accounts and introductions to a number of key relationships with Lloyds and Lloyds brokers that are even stronger today. Ashley Hurd, Vice President and manager of our insurance department, joined Hall & Company during the early days of establishing its insurance practice back in 1994. We had about 35 insurance customers at the time, five of which were fairly large accounts for a still fledgling brokerage firm. We began to systematically market our services nationwide and focused on our specialized expertise in design firm professional liability. Since then we have grown steadily to our present size of 35 dedicated employees. There are currently twelve shareholders of Hall & Company, each of them longstanding employees.Over the years we have outgrown our office space six times and now occupy our own office building and own the adjacent site for our future expansion. We moved into our new office building (featured on the Contact Us page) in May 2008. We take our staff’s professional development very seriously and every customer service representative and, of course, broker is required to obtain an insurance licensure. We maintain licenses in all states with the exception of Hawaii. Our senior staff have such designations as Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Certified Risk Manager (CRM) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), and hold Excess and Surplus lines licenses.
