VC3 was formed in May 1996 to discuss the current workforce shortage and the lack of construction training available. The identified training shortages and came up with a plan to provide standardized, industry-driven training. In July 2000, VC3 became an accredited sponsor of the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and now offers certified training classes for construction personnel in several trades including carpentry, millwright, sheet-metal, HVAC and painting. At the same time, VC3 had been collaborating with technical center faculty and state department of education to incorporate the NCCER program into building trades programs.
