INTERA was originally established in 1974 as INTERA Environmental Consultants, a combination of the environmental division of INTERCOMP Resource Development Engineering of Houston, Texas and ERA Sciences of Alberta, Canada. Initially, INTERA focused on providing air quality services, ranging from airborne and ground level measurements to detailed computer analysis of the results and prediction of future air quality changes. In the mid 1970s, the company began to apply INTERCOMP's sophisticated petroleum reservoir engineering technology to the area of groundwater flow and transport. Under contract to the United States Geological Survey, INTERA developed the first groundwater code to couple flow, energy transport, and contaminant transport in three dimensions, accounting for density and viscosity effects.In the 1980s, we established ourselves as a leader in quantitative analyses to support programs involving the geologic isolation of radioactive wastes. This included a multi-year contract with the U.S. Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of radioactive waste disposal performance at various types of sites (e.g., salt domes, bedded salt, basalt) in locations across the U.S. In addition to quantitative modeling, we began to provide hydrogeologic field testing and test analyses services for several other radioactive waste disposal projects including the Swiss national program (NAGRA) and the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant site.In the 1990s, we expanded our hydrogeologic characterization and testing expertise to include site investigation and remediation activities at Superfund, petroleum storage tank, and a variety of other industrial sites. INTERA also began to use our site characterization expertise in support of hazardous waste facility siting and permitting. We continued our involvement in radioactive waste isolation programs, including a multi-year contract at DOE's proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain where we were responsible for performance assessment activities in support of the facility's design and licensing. INTERA also began to develop several innovative technologies to characterize and remediate dense non-aqueous phase liquids (e.g., chlorinated solvents), which represent a persistent contamination problem at Department of Defense and other federal and industrial facilities across the U.S. In 1995, INTERA was acquired by Duke Engineering & Services (DE&S) and subsequently operated as the Geosciences Business Unit of DE&S.In the 2000s, we began focusing our tradition of quantitative problem solving and code development to support water resources management in the areas of water availability, optimal water-use strategies, and water-demand forecasting through the application of statistics, numerical models, and remote sensing technology. In January of 2002, the INTERA name was re-established after an employee buyout of the Geosciences Business Unit from DE&S. In the environmental area, the 2000s have seen an expansion of our site investigation and remediation services to include work at brownfield and electric utility sites as well as former bombing ranges with unexploded ordnance. We have also enhanced our regulatory compliance and permitting support services to the mining industry. To support all of our service areas, INTERA has also developed expertise in custom GIS and database applications.Today, we continue to focus on three key service areas; environmental, water resources, and waste isolation. In each of these areas, INTERA brings unique and specialized experience that adds value to client projects.
