When you cruise down the Lake and admire some of those "Landmark" homes that just stand out more than the others, there's a good chance that you are looking at a home designed and built by Thomas Construction Company.
It was a humble beginning.
In 1975, Wayne Thomas and his brother, Ray, started the business with two employees and one home to build. The homes at the Lake then were small, most of them being seasonal vacation homes, rectangular in shape and basic in design. Wayne saw the need for more creativity and began designing homes in 1976.
Ray left the company in the early 1980's and shortly thereafter, Jim Nugent and Dan Lind became partners and an integral part of the construction team. Wayne laughs and says, "They call me the senior partner, but only because I'm a little older."
The company continued to grow steadily as the Lake evolved from a vacation area to the community of today, with most of the homes being built as primary residences.
Our design goals today are much the same as in the early years. It is even more important that we pay attention in every detail as to how the home will best blend in with the natural surroundings and take advantage of the beauty of the Lake. The success of the company can be attributed to having an eye for detail, focusing on the distinct needs of each customer and a design uniquely suited to the site.
Thomas Construction continues to expand its operations. Dan heads up all residential operations, while Jim takes care of the commercial division with projects underway in five adjoining states. Wayne stays involved with the design of the homes and with most of the homes being design/build, a considerable amount of time is required by all.
"In the early years, plans were fairly simple, we could some times complete a set of plans within a week or so, however with the size and complexity of today's homes, much more time is required.", Wayne says. These are large home. Three of the nine homes currently in the mix are more than 10,000 square feet, with the others ranging from 4,000 to 8,000 square feet.
Wayne, Dan and Jim all live in the Lake area and are active members of their communities.
"The Lake has been a great place to live and work," they agree. "We're thankful for the opportunity to design and build for our friends and neighbors. It has been particularly satisfying to have met and worked with so many great people the past 33 years.
Our employees have been an important asset to our organization. Several have been with us more than 25 years, most 10 to 15 years, adding up to a lot of construction experience." Wayne says.
The future of the company looks bright with the addition of a new generation of builders. Sons Eric Thomas and Chad Nugent are now with the company and promise to carry on those same "Thomas" traditions for years to come.
