And we have the flexibility to economically complete smaller or unusual projects. Our roots date to 1937 when a construction partnership formed that evolved into Houston Contracting Company (HCC). HCC came to Alaska in the early days of the Prudhoe Bay boom and was acquired by the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation in 1985. ASRC later formed Natchiq as a holding company over HCC and Alaska Petroleum Contractors, which earlier had purchased Pioneer Oilfield Services, Inc. ASRC's energy service subsidiaries grew rapidly during the 1990s as existing companies were acquired and new national and international operations were initiated. In April 2003, we streamlined our energy services businesses to better meet changing market demands, and underwent a successful re-branding from "Natchiq" to "ASRC Energy Services." With nearly 4,000 employees, AES (with its subsidiaries) has emerged as one of Alaska's largest private employers and the largest oilfield services employer in the state. We have achieved this growth primarily through the diversification of service offerings based on the full field life cycle, improved efficiency, and strengthened market position. Between 1999 and 2005, earnings and revenues have steadily increased. The Engineering News-Record consistently ranks ASRC Energy Services in the upper 30 percent of the top 400 contractors in the U.S. AES is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC), the largest of Alaska's 13 Native Regional Corporations. ASRC is the Native Regional Corporation for the Arctic Slope of Alaska, a region which encompasses vast natural resources, including the North Slope oil fields, the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Formed in 1971 under the terms of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, ASRC is a private, for-profit corporation that manages five million acres of land and the business interests of its 9,000 Inupiat Shareholders. ASRC is the largest Alaska-owned and operated company and one of the largest minority owned-companies in the United States. For the past 12 years, ASRC has ranked first on Alaska Business Monthly's "Top 49ers" list, a ranking of the top Alaskan-owned and operated companies. ASRC's annual revenues reached 1.6 billion dollars in 2005, and the total work force exceeds 6,600 employees. Combined with our qualifications and experience, this North Slope connection makes AES a natural part of the oil and gas industry in Alaska.
