In 1912 Robertss great-grandfather opened a small furniture store in Haverhill, Massachusetts. His son William and Williams wife Rose worked in the store for several years before opening their own retail furniture store known as Boston Furniture Company. Their son Norris worked with his parents at the familys store until he was called to serve in World War II. When he returned from the service he assumed the full responsibility of managing Boston Furniture Company. In 1971 Norris expanded the business with additional locations to accommodate a growing customer base. The new locations were known as Cabot House.
While growing up Norriss son Robert (Bobby) spent a lot of time working with his father learning various aspects of the furniture business. In 1977 when Robert (Bobby) received his MBA from Harvard Business School, he officially joined the family business. He worked closely with his father until Norriss death in April1995.
Since then the Cabot House family has grown to 9 Cabot House Stores, 2 Ethan Allen Stores, 1 Baker Store, 6 Thomasville Stores and 2 Drexel Heritage Stores.
