Schafer Hardwood Flooring Company (SHFC) was officially started in 1981, known then as Schafer Woodworks. However, sawdust entered the family bloodstream many years earlier in 1935. Ferdinand Lange (Scott Schafer's Grandfather) started a sawmill business in Taylor, Michigan as a sideline for his farming operation by using horses and a steam engine to gather logs and power the sawmill.In 1981, Ralph Schafer (Scott's Father) moved the sawmill to the family farm outside of Tecumseh, Michigan. Scott Schafer officially started SHFC and with his father they sawed and sold green lumber until 1987. Next, Scott expanded the business into kiln-dried lumber and milling. The company quickly became known for their high quality custom doors, moldings, flooring and stair parts.In 1992, the production division was added to manufacture the highest quality hardwood flooring by utilizing state of the art equipment and laser technology. SHFC has become an industry leader in processing specific grades of hardwood lumber into specified grades of flooring as cost effectively as possible. Our humidity controlled warehouse is fully stocked to meet our customer's needs throughout the Midwest and worldwide. Our rapid growth has enabled us to add three new distribution centers in 2001 and double the fleet size of delivery trucks.
