In 1964, on a visit to the World’s Fair in New York held in a borough of Queens known as Flushing Meadows Park, the Mexican Pavilion is where the inspiration and conception of Elon took place. Parts of the Mexican Pavilion were adorned with Talavera tiles. These handmade, hand-painted tiles whose original designs are from Talavera, Spain are what Elon embraced and began to import and distribute in the U.S. With over 100 different Talavera designs, Elon renamed many to help market them in the United States. With names such as Bouquet, Damask and Arbor, these designs were easily integrated into the minds of designers, architects and builders across the country.Elon then partnered the Talavera tiles with Mexican unglazed Terra Cotta and registered these under the name of Carrillo. In 1971, Ken Rossomando became the President of Elon Inc. He realized that the American market, although still infatuated with Talavera and Terra Cotta, were also seeking more refined materials. Mr. Rossomando traveled to Europe and defined exclusive lines of hand-painted ceramic tiles with manufacturers in Italy, England, Portugal and France. By the mid-nineties, Elon had also begun to manufacture their own line of hand-made white body ceramic wall tile in their San Antonio, Texas facility. Elon today offers a vast array of different sizes and shapes along with beautiful moldings, borders, relief decorative and architectural elements to choose from. They also offer an incredible palate of glaze colors to help you create your personal environment.Mr. Rossomando, understanding the need to continuously evolve, also began to import over 100 different stones whose origins include Brazil, China, Israel, Italy, India, Mexico and Spain. Over the years Elon has maintained inventories of 5/8” mosaics up to 24” x 24” tile in these stones.Elon offers a unique dealership program comprised of beautifully designed small concept boards, created to help our dealers sell to their customers. Today, Elon has over 400 dealers throughout the United States, and a retail showroom in Mount Kisco, New York. The retail showroom in Mount Kisco is open to the public Monday – Saturday from 9:00am – 5:00pm, you’ll find that our design staff will help you to create your perfect home environment.
