Our company's roots go back to the early 1930's -- Sam Sklar's paint and hardware business in Queens, very close to the neighborhood that continues to house our present day enterprise. Sam, a Russian immigrant and self-styled entrepreneur and inventor, chose an industry in which he could use his talents while still contributing to his community.
After struggling through, and then ultimately thriving in, the hardware business during the War Years, the late 40's building boom on Long Island saw the opening of Sklar & Sons, the family's hardware supply and installation company.
Sam's ingenuity came through when he patented an innovative "knocked-down" steel frame, which soon revolutionized the door installation industry. This success, in turn, led to the opening of additional steel door and fire door companies.
As the business continued to evolve, Sam's sons, Martin and Victor, decided to further extend their activities in the metal and wood door industries. It was this diversification that led to the founding of Manhattan Door Corporation, the premier flush wood door manufacturer in the NY metropolitan area.
Today, under the able management of a third generation of Sklars, Manhattan Door continues to thrive. It has enhanced its leadership position among area producers through on-going improvements to its 75,000 sq. ft. Rewe St. facility; the application of state-of-the-art technology using the latest CNC equipment; and our unique full service approach, including:
- take-off services - per spec constructions - special sizes (up to 10-0)
- machining for hardware - custom finishing - professional consulting services
