Company Description:

Crucible Materials Corporation has been a pioneer in the technical development of tool steels, powder metallurgy, titanium alloys, and advanced alloy systems for leading edge manufacturers. Crucible Materials Corporation was created in December 1985 following an employee buyout from Colt Industries. This was a return to independence that started in 1900 with the incorporation of 13 steel companies into the Crucible Steel Company of America. The result was a strong quality oriented specialty steel company. Crucible's history dates back to 1876 when Sanderson Brothers of Sheffield, England established a plant in Syracuse, New York. Sanderson became one of the 13 plants forming the new corporation. It was at this location in 1906 that steel from the first electric arc furnace in the United States was produced. Crucible Research was founded in 1929 and remains the center of Crucible's development of new processes and products, improvement in the quality of existing products, and the solution of production and consumer problems. The company produced the world's first commercial powder metal tool steel in 1971 at the Syracuse plant. The powder technology was expanded to include superalloy powder production in a facility built in Oakdale, Pennsylvania in 1976. A titanium atomizer was developed in 1984 making Crucible one of the most technically advanced producers of powder in the world.
