Memphis International Airport, "America's Aerotropolis" is a world-class facility serving more than a million passengers a year. It is the only airport in North America considered to be an "aerotropolis," an airport-integrated region extending outward from the airport in strings and clusters of airport-linked businesses and their associate residential complexes.
The phrase aerotropolis was coined in 2006 by Dr. John Kasarda, professor at the University of North Carolina. Since then, the vision of the Memphis aerotropolis and its economic potential has become a major part of Memphis' long range plans.
In fact, Memphis International Airport and the concept of America's Aerotropolis are at the forefront of the Memphis Fast Forward initiative that has been launched by a partnership of Memphis Tomorrow, the Greater Memphis Chamber, and both the City of Memphis and Shelby County.
