Company Description:
Pocahontas Coal Company has more than 230 employees, with operations located in southern Raleigh County in the communities of Killarney, Josephine, Lillybrook and Affinity.
Pocahontas has three deep mines, a surface mine and two highwall miner operations, in addition to the East Gulf preparation plant, which has been upgraded significantly. The company's annual coal production capacity is more than 1 million tons, with reserves totaling 72 million recoverable tons of low-volatile metallurgical coal.
Pocahontas' Affinity complex consists of an existing slope mine in the Pocahontas No. 3 seam, a coal preparation plant and a rail-loading facility. Although Affinity is currently idle, the company's five-year plan includes reopening the 60-million-ton reserve, which has some of the finest quality Pocahontas No. 3 coal in southern West Virginia. The company's Weirwood reserve, a large virgin block of Sewell coal, also represents additional future mining opportunities.
United Coal Company, Pocahontas' parent company, has favorable, long-term price indications from domestic and foreign consumers for the low-volatile coal produced by Pocahontas Coal Company.
In 2005, United Coal Company purchased the assets of Beckley-based White Mountain Mining Co., LLC and certain affiliates to establish Pocahontas Coal Company.
