Company Description:
Community Hospital of San Bernardino opened in 1910. At the time, we were known as Ramona Hospital. We were located on the corner of 4th St. and Arrowhead, and had 42 beds. One of the challenges of the location was the two-story building . . . with no elevators! We had to carry mothers upstairs on gurneys to deliver babies. In 1953, we purchased property on the corner of 17th St and Western Avenue, and launched the United Appeal for Hospital Beds. With much support from the community, we raised the money needed to construct a new hospital. Entertainer Sammy Davis Jr., whose life was saved at our hospital, joined the effort by hosting a gala, star-studded fundraiser. The new hospital opened with 133 beds, 30 bassinets and 275 employees. As the community continued to grow, so did we. In 1987, through the generosity of the hospital's Foundation and Monida B. Cummings, a five-story patient care tower was constructed. In 1996, a 57,000 square foot, three-level medical office building was constructed and connected to the hospital by a bridge that spans Medical Center Drive. Today, Community Hospital of San Bernardino stands as a 321-bed, non-profit hospital with more than 1,000 employees. We affiliated with Catholic Healthcare West in 1998, although we remain a non-denominational. We are proud to be a trusted resource of community health services and educational support.
