The MS is comprised of a wide diversity of medical administrative, scientific, and provider specialties ranging from the management and support of the Army's health services system to direct patient care. The four Assistant Chiefs also function as the chiefs of the eight AOCs/MFAs Health Services, Laboratory Sciences, Preventive Medicine, Behavioral Sciences, Pharmacy, Optometry, Podiatry, and Aeromedical Evacuation. The Assistant Corps Chiefs provide career direction to their respective MFA/AOC as well as recommend policies to the Corps Chief. * Health Services * Laboratory Sciences * Preventive Medicine Sciences * Behavioral Sciences * Pharmacy * Optometry * Podiatry * Health Service Maintenance Technician The Medical Service Corps has two primary functions. First, it provides administrative officers who manage various aspects of Combat Health Support ranging from the evacuation of the sick and wounded to the management of over 9 billion dollars in resources. Second, the Corps provides allied science officers who directly impact the health of the United States Army in areas ranging from patient care to pharmacy and the sciences. Clinical Laboratory Officer performing Blood Inventory The Medical Service Corps prepares its officers to be at the forefront of healthcare. For example, the Corps provides its officers with excellent opportunities for advanced degrees. Every year, the Corps offers many programs to earn Masters and Ph.D. degrees as well as opportunities to train with private industry. ESOs and Entomologists performing Preventive Medicine training There are 24 diverse Areas of Concentration (AOC) within the Corps. The assignments associated with the different AOCs range from a Medical Platoon Leader in a Combat Arms Battalion, to a biochemist developing vaccines and other agents to defeat the effects of Weapons of Mass Destruction. The Corps is made up of highly skilled officers who provide leadership and expertise to the Army in support of the Global War on Terrorism--from the front lines of Afghanistan and Iraq to the laboratories of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
