Faulkner Architects' work has largely been built in the Lake Tahoe region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and has received numerous awards over the past twenty five years. Houses have been the focus of the practice with an emphasis on not only sensitivity to site, rather a type of landscape intensification. Forms inhabit their sites in ways that not only preserve their natural features, but explore and reveal them. LEED certified Hospitality projects including an on Mountain restaurant at Northstar at Tahoe (Schaffers camp, 2003) and golf Club, (Gray's Crossing, 2007) follow the same direction. Explorations in vernacular form rendered in rough tactile materials including concrete, steel and reclaimed wood generate direction and the basis for the work. Transformation(s) then follow generated through response to client, program, light and sustainability.
Greg Faulkner, AIA grew up in the Midwest, Gary, Indiana, visiting US Steel with his grandfather. He was impressed early on by the nature of materials and what it took to make them, especially steel. Coupled with exposure to this rough industrial process, family trips to his grandmother's farm near Lexington, Kentucky instilled an appreciation and sensitivity for the natural landscape and the way the farmhouses and barns were built in the rolling hills.
He began his education at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana and earned a degree in Industrial Graphic Design in 1978. Greg studied Architecture at the University of New Mexico and The Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) and earned a Master of Architecture in 1987. Awards were received at both universities, The Alpha Rho Chi Medal from UNM and The Francis Ward Chandler Prize for design from MIT. While in Cambridge, he worked on the 1988 Soul Olympic Village with Ku Sung Woo and also spent time in the offices of Ben Thompson and Arrowstreet. Greg has been in private practice since 1993. His design work has evolved through constant experimentation with material and form in a non linear way alternating between objective and non objective forms and crafted with highly finished metals and woods with straightforward detailing.
With the firm since 1998, Darrell Linscott, AIA is a native of Lake Tahoe and knows the lay of the land well. He is a licensed Architect in California and studied architecture at the University of Idaho and the Phoenix Institute of Technology and earned his degree in 1978. He has managed the project delivery for our most complicated projects, including Schaffers Camp and Grey's Crossing. His twenty five years in the business of architecture has given him a common sense approach to construction documentation and detailing. Darrell has overseen the construction phase for over fifty built works.
The firm operates two offices, one in Truckee and one in Berkeley. Both offices work in tandem as a team such that all levels of expertise overlap. Greg travels between the two offices weekly to visit construction sites and to input on the smallest details of the practice. The cross pollination of what Greg calls the Tahoe School and the intellectually charged, architectural buzz of Berkeley and San Francisco has driven the work to new levels of sustainability and experiential quality.
