Landscape Architecture is commonly defined as a profession which applies artistic and scientific principles to the research, planning, design and management of both natural and built environments. Landscape architects work at a variety of scales from large-scale regional planning studies to park planning and residential design. They are frequently concerned with the stewardship and conservation of natural, constructed and human resources. An understanding of the "big picture" and a detailed knowledge of landscape materials and techniques allows landscape architects to work on a broad range of landscape related projects including landscape assessment for best uses, determining landscape sensitivities and resiliencys from which facilities or activities can be sited, and developing a design aesthetic which takes its cues from the surrounding cultural and natural landscape.
