Design & Construction Job Descriptions & Questions

What is a Nuclear Engineer?

Engineers in this position design and develop elements of the propulsion plant systems related to mechanical components, thermal and fluid systems, and heat transfer. Work efforts will include analyses, testing and data reduction, and the evaluation and resolution of technical issues related to the design or operation of propulsion plant systems. Individuals in this role provide technical expertise, leadership and mentoring for others.

Required Skills
Senior:
BS degree in Mechanical, Marine or related Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of six years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in Mechanical, Marine or related Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience.

Experience in at least one of the following areas: fluid systems, heat transfer design and analysis, systems engineering, or systems integration.

Principal:
BS degree in Mechanical, Marine or related Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in Mechanical, Marine or related Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience.

Experience in at least one of the following areas: fluid systems, heat transfer design and analysis, systems engineering, or systems integration.

Preferred Skills
Demonstrated ability to effectively convey technical information in a clear and concise manner (written as well as verbal).

Demonstrated logical problem solving approach and experiences.

Demonstrated leadership and ability to work in a teaming environment.

Additional academic or job experience involving computational analysis (FEA,CFD), computer programming(FORTRAN, C++), structural/mechanical analysis, testing, or materials science.

NNPP operations experience or equivalent engineering experience related to nuclear power plant systems, design, testing, operation, or servicing.

Holds or has held a DOE, DOD or other government security clearance.

Answer: 1
Nuclear engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the application of the breakdown (fission) as well as the fusion of atomic nuclei and/or the application of other sub-atomic physics, based on the principles of nuclear physics. In the sub-field of nuclear fission, it particularly includes the interaction and maintenance of systems and components like nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants, and/or nuclear weapons. The field also includes the study of medical and other applications of (generally ionizing) radiation, nuclear safety, heat/thermodynamics transport, nuclear fuel and/or other related technology (e.g., radioactive waste disposal), and the problems of nuclear proliferation.
